Camping @ Purtis-Creek State Park

Here are some fishing pictures from our camping trip to Purtis-Creek State Park at the beginning of November. We fished off a boat dock that morning using worms. Bella and I caught a couple small Blue gill and Adisyn caught a very large one! Later that night we went to the lighted fishing peer. It is amazing to watch all the huge bass swimming below. Purtis-Creek State Park is a catch and release lake for Bass so the Bass get huge and friendly! Adisyn baited her hook with a worm and threw the float just past the fish. She then reeled the worm directly in front of the basses mouth. The fish struck the bait hard and Adie set the hook even harder! Everyone on the the crowded fishing dock was very impressed. I was so proud! She had a great fishing day.

Hot Dog Fishing @ Huffhines Park

Here's some pictures of a Saturday (back in September) at Huffines Park with my kids! We had a great day of fishing with Oscar Mayer's Cheese Dogs. Those grilled wienies made the best bait! It is our new go to bait for Blue gill and Catfish! We also caught a turttle but no picture of that because everyone took off screaming and running.

Daingerfield SP

I took some time to visit Daingerfield State Park a couple weeks ago for a kid free weekend getaway with my hawt lady. We were hardly surprised at our typical luck of being assigned the camp cul de sac shared with a Boy Scout Troop. Not too romantic, but we made it work!

It's a great little lake to take a family. The park has clean and updated amenities including a fishing pier, hiking trail, and park store. The restrooms and showers are especially clean!

The fishing pier is super large, lighted, and nice, with built in seating and a cleaning station close by. The water was crystal clear and I had a good time watching the little blue gill steal the wigglers of my #6 bait hooks. Additional pier entertainment included casting for the hawt lady's new pink fishing hat that drifted away after a wind gust blew it off her brain. I was finally given worth that day after about 20 casts, a tackle switch, and a line snarl with the hawt lady. A separate pair of pier visitors claimed it as the "catch of the day"!

A well maintained 2.5 mile hiking trail circles the lake.
I was coerced into making the trek with my condition that we bring along our fishing rods. My request proved to be pointless. The trail is lacking in bank fishing spots. I would recommend renting one of the boats for fishing towards the bank. The dam area seemed to be a popular place for the small boats to gather. Fallen timber skirts the bank. My lone cast ended with a snapped line from hooking a log (tree bass). Some of the shallow areas are packed with white flower topped lily pads. Other siting’s included lizards, turtles, frogs, birds, and wildflowers. The pace of our hike at one point went to turbo after we saw a huge black snake with yellow stripes!

The park store is located by a beautiful swimming area. They sell snacks, drinks, ice cream, souvenirs, and fishing worms! For an affordable fee you are able to rent paddle boats, canoes, and kayaks. The friendly host advised us to visit Bailey's Hardware Store for minnows. (For some reason I can't find the place on Google maps so I dropped a marker on my map if anyone is interested.) Be sure and purchase some of the fire color changing sticks that they sell at the park store. They make camp fires psychedelic!

Web researching the lake I learned the lily pads are often the location for chain pickerel, an uncommon species in the north Texas area. My next visits of this beautiful park will definitely include a canoe rental and chain pickerel hunt! I loved this place and can't wait to return with the kids.

The one that got away! / shark bait

Catfish lessons

¡hola! ....Well I forgot to blog... : / ...DOH!

I really haven't done much fishing lately...It's too damn hot!

But,.

Earlier this summer I made it out to Kimball Bend Park with some friends and a cluster of  kids for some weekend camping action. Kimball Bend is a park on the Brazos river right before it turns into Lake Whitney. The park is ran by the The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The park has been one of my favorite camping spots for years. I enjoy it because its small and doesn't get overcrowded .That part of the  Brazos river is a great place to take a small boat (at least when the water is up) without having to worry about choppy waters .

I was boat less on this trip but, a friend did bring a trailer with some kayaks to play around with. I got a chance to paddle one out for a bit and was really surprised to find out how easy kayaking is. I had expected it to be a lot more work but it really doesn't take much to get yourself moving across the water. I now have kayak added to my wish list! I was able to convince my son to paddle out and set a jug line a little down stream from a bridge pillar. In doing this we learned that life jackets are required by the State of Texas. I assumed the law was only for motor boats, but it does make sense. Luckily he had one in the kayak with him, but his friends in his paddling posse didn't get so lucky. Well at least my buddy, (their dad) wasn't so lucky. It ended up being an expensive weekend for him!

It was a lucky trip for me! I was bank fishing during the whole "minors getting pulled over in kayaks fiasco". A local and myself on the rivers edge had been side tracked while watching all the drama unfold. In the middle of our conversation, trying to figure out what was going on on the river with the kids, he starts jumping and yelling "You got a bite". My pole, about 20 yards away stabbed into a rod holder, was bent over like a rainbow! We simultaneously dropped our beers and ran over to the rod. The local guy was so excited he made it over to the rod and reel quicker than me. He grabbed the pole and set the hook and begin reeling it in. At first I was a little upset, but just watching the dudes excitement was so entertaining, I forgot it was my fish he was reeling in. He soon realized what he was doing and a little embarrassed , handed over the gear for me to battle the fish to the bank. It ended up being a nice size catfish. Nothing huge but enough to be proud of. Especially because it was the only fish caught over the weekend.

I didn't think about it till we were packed up and driving away. The jug line sat down river, the remainder of the weekend, forgotten about. I drove the packed van over as close to the jug line as I could park and had my son put on a life jacket and swim out to retrieve it. He wasn't real happy about it, but it gave me a chance to sit back ,laugh and reflect on the weekend.

Cabela's, Bubble Floats, & Does red disappear underwater?

I made time to finally visit a Cabela's last Monday. I wanted to try and find some small red circle hooks. All I can say is "WoW WoW WoW". I could have stayed all day but my girl said we needed to leave before she grew a penis (we left soon after that!).

One of the first things I saw and slapped on the wish list was this Goliath:

I think it would be great for trailering the boat in the dark, or bow fishing at night, and especially good for signaling Batman!

I also picked up a package of A-Just-A-Bubble Floats:
I recently read an article on fly fishing without a fly rod.
http://globalflyfisher.com/fishbetter/bubble.htmSoon
I plan on visiting one of the small ponds that are stocked with trout for the winter by Texas Parks and Wildlife and trying out this technique. Here is a link to find a trout stocked ponds: http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/fishboat/fish/management/stocking/trout_stocking.phtml
Trout fishing post soon to come!

We'll I found my small red circle hooks that I was looking for...and as a bonus I found some snelled with red Cajun line...

I always liked the idea of the red line and the theory of how the line was invisible under water....but this got me thinking....do the hooks disappear under water too?...and then I was looking at some Berkley Gulp Crappie Nibbles...and they come in red glitter! ...do theses vanish too?...if so whats the point?....I bought the silver ones!
